InterventionMelatonin
Alternate Name
OrganismDrosophila melanogaster
Aging PhenotypeLife-span extension
Allele TypeN/A
StrainOregon
DescriptionAddition of melatonin to the diet at 100 ug/mL resulted in a 14% and 33% increase in median and maximum life-span, respectively (Bonilla et al., 2002).
In a previous study, the same concentration of melatonin given to the HEM strain resulted in no effect on life-span (Anisimov et al., 1997).
Gene FunctionMelatonin is a hormone synthesized by the pineal gland and has a wide range of effects on endocrine and reproductive functions.
Other PhenotypesDietary supplementation with 20mg/L melatonin resulted in an approximately 5% increase in the mean life span of female CBA mice (Anisimov et al., 2001).
