DescriptionTreatment of worms with 5 mM or 0.5 mM EUK-8 results in 83% and 21% reduction in mean life-span, respectively. Treatment with 0.05 mM EUK-8 has no effect on life-span (Keaney and Gems, 2003). This contradicts a previous report by Melov et al. (2000) showing that treatment with 5 mM EUK-8 extends life-span in C. elegans. These opposing observations may be due to different methods used for administering the drug (e.g. daily vs. every-other-day treatment) and/or different compound sources.
Gene FunctionEUK-8 acts as a superoxide dismutase and catalase mimetic (Baker et al., 1998).
Other PhenotypesEUK-8 treatment has been reported to shorten life-span in the house fly at concetrations greater than 0.5 mM (Bayne and Sohal, 2002).
