InterventionMelatonin
Alternate Name
OrganismDrosophila melanogaster
Aging PhenotypeNo effect on life-span
Allele TypeN/A
StrainHEM (high embryonic mortality)
DescriptionAddition of melatonin to the diet at 100 ug/mL had no significant effect on life-span (Anisimov et al., 1997).
In as separate study, the same concentration of melatonin given to the Oregon wild type strain produced a significant extension in both median and maximum life-span (Bonilla et al., 2001).
Gene FunctionMelatonin is a hormone synthesized by the pineal gland and has a wide range of effects on endocrine and reproductive functions.
Other PhenotypesDietary supplementation with 20mg/L melatonin resulted in an approximately 5% increase in the mean life span of femal CBA mice (Anisimov et al., 2001).
