|Intervention||antioxidant drug EUK-8|
|Aging Phenotype||Shortened life-span|
|Description||Administration of EUK-8 at concentrations greater than 0.5 mM shortened the mean life-span of flies under normoxic conditions (Bayne and Sohal, 2002). At concentrations less than 0.5 mM EUK-8 had no effect on life-span. Under hyperoxic conditions, administration of EUK-8 shortened life span.|
|Gene Function||EUK-8 acts as a superoxide dismutase and catalase mimetic (Baker et al., 1998).|
|Other Phenotypes||In one report, administration of EUK-8 at 0.5 mM concentration extended mean and maximum life span in C. elegans by about 50% (Melov et al., 2000). However, a more recent report finds that EUK-8 shortens life-span in C. elegans at concentrations higher than 0.05 mM (Keaney and Gems, 2003).|
EUK-8 had no significant effect on the protein carbonyl content of old flies (Bayne and Sohal, 2002).
