DescriptionHuman fibroblasts grown in the continuous presence of 20-30 mM L-carnosine demonstrated an increase in replicative and chronological life-spans (McFarland and Holliday, 1994). Transfer of old non-treated cells to medium supplemented with L-carnosine rejuvenated the cells with regard to morphology, cell yield, and life-span.

Other PhenotypesHigh concentrations of carnosine (>50mM) prevented the increased replicative life span and slowed the rate of cell division (McFarland and Holliday, 1994). D-carnosine, L-homocarnosine, L-anserine, or beta-alanine at similar concentrations had no effect on replicative or chronological life-span.
