InterventionPBA
Alternate Name4-phenylbutyrate
OrganismDrosophila melanogaster
Aging PhenotypeLife-span extension
Allele TypeN/A
StrainCanton-S and w1118
DescriptionExposure of flies to PBA results an approximately 35% increase in life-span (Kang et al., 2002). Adult flies exposed to PBA from day 12 of adulthood onward demonstrate a comparable life-span extension to those treated throughout life.
Gene FunctionPBA inhibits histone deacetylase activity, which results in substantial alteration of gene expression (Lea and Randolph, 1998).
Other PhenotypesPBA treated flies exhibit enhanced stress resistance (starvation and paraquat) and locomotor activity (Kang et al., 2002).
