DescriptionTargeted overexpression of SOD2 in motor neurons alone extends life span by 30% (Phillips et al., 2000). Induced overexpression of SOD2 in adult flies extends life span by up to 37% (Sun et al., 2002).
Gene FunctionSOD2 encodes a mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase that reduces superoxide anion to hydrogen peroxide.
Other PhenotypesOverexpression of catalase in combination with SOD2 has no added benefit for life span (Sun et al., 2002). Flies overexpressing SOD2 or catalase did not demonstrate a decrease in metabolism as measured by oxygen consumption (Sun et al., 2002).
