Gene FunctionInvolved in homologous recombination (Basile et al., 1992). Rad51p promotes strand-exchange between homologous single-stranded and double-stranded DNA (Sung, 1994). Member or RAD52 epistasis group (Sung, 2000).
Other PhenotypesRad51p is required for gene conversion, but not for repair of an HO-induced double-strand break (Malkova et al., 1996). Deletion of rad51 decreases formation of extrachromosomal rDNA circles (Park et al., 1999).
